 BOUNCY BOUNCY

by Aaron Liddard, recorded by LjC (London jazz Collective) in 2007, at Vinylizor studios by Jay Glover and featuring Quentin Collins (trumpet), Julian Burdock (guitar), Ashley Kingsley (keys), Aaron Liddard (sax), Marc Parnell (drums). produced by Aaron Liddard, Ben Greenslade-Stanton & Jay Glover.

3 Baritone saxes with 17 piece big band. All the music – main riff, chords, drum grooves, soli sections – came to me one morning, together with the notion of “Bouncy Bouncy Bouncy…” I was living in Brixton and the baritone sax had become a large part of my life. The LjC was beginning to attempt challenging and ambitious compositions written by band members and we were rehearsing regularly. With the LjC as an outlet and the spare time in which to write, I was a vessel for the spirit of music that blessed me. One month later I had the full score

 RAG PAHADI CHI

by Aaron Liddard, recorded at Salford University studios in 1996, with Clive Wilks (voice), Jamie Odell (keys), Cheyne Towers (bass), Dave Walsh (drums), Danny Ward (Udu), Aaron Liddard (Yamaha WX11 windsynth).

Indian musicians Hariprasad Chaurasia (flute) and Zakir Hussain (tabla) inspired this piece together with the study of Tai Chi from my teacher and bass player Cheyne Towers. The first insiration was the ostinato rhythm of indian raga Pahadi, together with Chaurasia’s classic bendy notes. I was studying my music degree at the time and I had elected to compose, perform and record my own music. I had an amazing team of musicians supporting me in Jamie Odell (now international jet-setting producer and DJ) Dave Walsh (now one of the most in-demand drummers in the north) and Cheyne Towers (now Hypno Therapist and Tai Chi coach in Highgate). With their support, plenty of time to write, I was a diligent vessel for the spirit of music and one afternoon I was blessed with this whole composition – every melody, bass line and lyrics

THE DREAM

by Aaron Liddard, recorded at Snowy central studios (London) by Snowy Raffael in 2003, featuring Emmanuella Grace (vocals).

I moved to London from Manchester in 2003. Relocation for musicians often means two years of returning home to work old jobs, and I was seeing a lot of the motorways that year. I had spruced up my image, worked on my website, practised, and was generally following every lead I could find. For the first time since taking up teaching, I was fully devoted to music. Working almost 24-7 to establish my career in the most competitive environment in European music. My girlfriend at the time introduced me to Snowy Raffael and we had done some house music together. Whilst passing Birmingham on the M6 “The Dream” arrived, all in one go – the lyrics (which are autobiographical), the polyrhythmic ostinato, bass line, chords, melody – all in one. I called Snowy, “Snowy I have a tune for you, can I come directly to your studio?” “Oh… okay… cool!” I had no means of writing or recording my ideas so I spent the rest of the journey reciting it all in my mind. We got most of the composition recorded in two hours, then Snowy produced it up and brought in Emanuella
